When all of the holiday excitement is over and energy/funds are low, February rolls around in all its dark and dreary glory. It’s a short month but that doesn’t make chugging through the bitter cold (hello Ontario), everlasting rain (hello BC) and general tiredness (hello world) much easier. We found an artist who can relieve some of those February blues and she goes by the name Mapei.

After a few listens of her album, Hey Hey, it’s tricky to not singalong. Her debut is full of feel-good, upbeat and emotive tunes with lyrics that’ll make your heart swell. Born Jacqueline Mapei Cummings, this bae decided to go by her middle name which means wise woman in a Liberian tribal language. This comes as no surprise because only a wise gal could combine cheery vibrant pop with such expressive R&B soul. Mapei was born on Rhode Island and moved to Stockholm in her childhood. She grew up spending her summers in the States and the rest of the year in Sweden, where she dabbled in rap. We are besotted with this worldly woman, her badass style, big locks and powerful voice. When Mapei insists “you’ve got so much soul,” it’s hard not to believe her so give her a listen!
