The sun is a gift. It provides the earth with warmth and light. It helps plants grow and flowers blossom. It provides humans with vitamin D which keeps us happy and our bones strong. It also makes the sky look insanely beautiful.
For half of each year, the sun sets earlier and earlier making our days shorter and our beds more appealing. Thank Goddess for the other half, where we get to stay out longer and wear less clothing. The earth’s tilt and its motion in orbit around the sun give us the winter and summer solstices. This year, the winter solstice comes on December 21, when the Northern Hemisphere will experience its shortest day and longest night of the year and the Southern Hemisphere will experience the peak of its summer.
A lot of us deal with winter blues, where staying indoors always seems like the best idea and curling up in bed with a laptop at 6pm is the norm. The winter months tend to be lonely, lethargic and lackluster, but they don’t have to be! Taking care of yourself is always important, and it is especially so when the sun’s company is lacking. Here are a few ways you can practice self-love and keep yourself smiling while getting used to the cold weather and long nights.
Way up, blessed. Thanks sun 🙌
When you wake up, think of something (literally anything) you’re grateful for. Take three deep breaths, drink a glass of water and stretch for a few minutes. This will seem like a hassle in the morning, especially if you’ve been snoozing, but it will do wonders for the mood in which you approach the rest of the day.
When you’re hungry, feed yourself and do it as well as you can with what you have or what you can afford. To actually eat seven servings of fruit or vegetables every day seems like a fanciful notion but even increasing your intake a lil will give you more energy to deal with daily annoyances. Oh yeah, and thanking your food is never a bad idea.
When you feel low, snapchat a friend you know can always make you smile. Listen to a song that makes you want to skip down the street or brings peace to your mind. Watch something that is guaranteed to make you laugh. Yes, you do deserve time to not do anything “useful.” In fact: laughing is useful. We tend to forget how much a good belly chuckle nourishes the soul.
He gets it.
Throughout the day, try to make life as easy for yourself as possible. If you feel like you can’t drag your feet all the way home one day, spend $3 on a bus. If you always feel like total shit in the mornings, prepare as much as you can the night before – food, outfit, shower. If you really want a chocolate bar after work or school, buy a goddamn Caramilk. It’s all about the little things.
Try to stay in the present moment, it’s easier to experience joy this way.
When you feel uneasy, mindfully take some slow, deep breaths. This calms every aspect of your existence.
Remember, summer is on its way! We made it through the shortest day of the year guys!!
♥ ♥ ♥ lots of love to you this winter solstice ♥ ♥ ♥
P.S. the sun is the frickin’ best but don’t forget about the moon, she is also darn beautiful.
